What Is Lorem Ipsum? The Story Behind Placeholder Text

Published 2026-06-06

Open almost any design mockup, website template, or print layout in progress and you will find the same nonsensical Latin: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" It is the design world's universal placeholder text, and it has a history far stranger and older than most people realize. Here is what it is, where it came from, and why professionals rely on it.

What it actually is

Lorem ipsum is scrambled, meaningless text used to fill space where real content will eventually go. It looks like language — it has the rhythm, word lengths, and letter distribution of natural writing — but it carries no meaning, which is precisely the point.

The 2000-year-old origin

Here is the surprising part: lorem ipsum is derived from a real work of classical literature. The passage comes from De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), a treatise on ethics written by the Roman statesman Cicero in 45 BC. The standard lorem ipsum text begins mid-word from a sentence in that work — "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum…" ("There is no one who loves pain itself…").

So why is it garbled? In the 1500s, an unknown printer took Cicero's text and scrambled it to create a type specimen book — a sample showing what different fonts looked like. Cutting and jumbling the words removed the meaning so viewers would judge the typography, not get drawn into reading. The scrambled version survived five centuries and became the standard.

Why designers use it instead of real text

It is a fair question: why not use real content, or just repeat "text text text"? Lorem ipsum solves two specific problems:

  • It prevents distraction. If you fill a mockup with readable English, clients and reviewers start critiquing the copy instead of the design. Meaningless text keeps attention on layout, spacing, and hierarchy.
  • It looks realistic. Repeating a single word like "text" creates an unnatural visual rhythm with identical word lengths. Lorem ipsum mimics the varied word lengths and letter frequencies of real language, so line breaks, hyphenation, and text blocks behave the way they will with actual content.

When NOT to use it

Placeholder text has one famous failure mode: shipping it by accident. Lorem ipsum has appeared in published books, on live websites, in printed advertisements, and even on physical products — an embarrassing and surprisingly common mistake. Two rules prevent it:

  1. Never use it in anything that could go live without a final content pass. Always replace it before launch.
  2. Test with realistic content lengths. Real copy is rarely as tidy as lorem ipsum — test with text that matches the actual length you expect, including awkwardly short and long cases.

Is it copyright-free?

Yes. The source text is two thousand years old and firmly in the public domain, so you can use lorem ipsum freely in any project, commercial or otherwise. The only cost is remembering to remove it.
